Goal Setting 101: Hold The Vision, Surrender The Rest

As someone who loves control, is perfectionist in the details, and appreciates a good plan, it can sometimes be challenging when things don't fall into place the way I wanted.

Many of us have visions and dreams, things we want to achieve, do, accomplish, have, become. And while it is great to have the dreams, there are a few things that we need to take into consideration before we can go all in on them.

1 - Where does the vision come from?

Like with everything in life, we can be motivated by fear, or by love. What are your dreams all about?

By fear, because we want to be seen as successful by others, we want to achieve a certain standard in society, we want to be able to write a job title in our CV, we want to belong and do things how everybody else apparently does them. By fear, because we want to receive validation from a boss, a parent, a partner, a neighbor, a friend. By fear, because our ego has the say in our mind and wants us to achieve something, because we would not be seen as "good enough" otherwise.

This is many people's default. However, there is another way. We can make sure our visions and dreams come from a place of love. Our motivation will feel differently.

Our visions can be motivated by love, because it is a dream we have on our heart that will make us a better human and will serve humanity. By love, because it is something that uplevels our own vibration, so our energy can ripple out to others, and we can be a blessing for them. By love, because it not only impacts us, but has a greater purpose on this Earth that may not always be visible, tangible, or clear to you yet.

Typical dreams people may have are things like a house, a car, a dog, a family, etc. These dreams can be motivated by fear, because you want others to see how "successful" you are. At the same time, these dreams can also be motivated by love, because it gives you the things you need to impact future generations and serve your family.

There are no right or wrong dreams. What matters most overall is that you checkin with your dreams and make sure they come from a place of love. Love for yourself, love for others, love for the world.

2 - What does the vision mean?

Once you're sure your visions come from a place of love, you can move on to the next step and get clear on what this vision means to you. Why does it matter to you? How is it unique to you? Can you get more clarity and details about it? How is it going to impact your life? The lives of others? Make the world a better place? Why did you receive this vision and not somebody else?

Take a moment to connect with the WHY behind your visions. Go through it one by one.

3 - Surrender the rest

Now that you are clearer about your visions and dreams, your next logical step may be to make a (perfect and detailed) plan. And there's nothing wrong about that.

But sometimes, we have a very clear plan about how something should happen. We want to be in control and make sure we stay on track with our dreams and visions. And in some things, this can be really helpful. Let's say you dream of hosting an event. The steps to making this happen can be very clear and can be broken down into really simple to do lists and very clear action steps.

However, there's something magical about holding the vision and surrendering the rest - not over-planning. Not micro-managing. Not controlling. What if the right event location came to you magically? What if somebody randomly tells you about something that was exactly what you needed to hear for your own event? If you were simply attached to your own plan, you might not be receptive for divine interventions.

We believe that we have things under control. But how much can we really control here? There is so much more to life than just the perfect plan. Things may go unplanned. Things may spin out of conrol. Things may fall apart...

It may not always be easy to let go of control, release the plan, and surrender it all to a higher power, but when you have faith that everything is working out for your highest good, then you can know that whatever will happen, will be good for you (even if it feels rather like the opposite at times!).

Everything is working out for me.

So, I'm inviting you to sit down with your dreams, your visions for the new year, for your future, for your career, for your life, and ask yourself the above questions. Hold the vision in your heart. Have a clear picture of it in your mind. (Make a plan if it helps - but don't be attached to it, and be open to miracles and divine interventions along the way.) Then surrender the rest to God (/the Universe) and have faith and know that everything is taken care of and is working out for your highest good.
